Wild Hare Club

7:30pm    |    Tickets £12

The Wild Hare Club returns to the cosy surrounds of The Globe in Hay-on-Wye for an evening of gentle psychedelic folk from Sproatly Smith and Pamela Wyn Shannon. Helping set the mood will be  Dj jus' jay with a judicious choice of tunes and the atmosphere will be further enhanced by subtle and seasonal visuals by Nick from MASH cinema
For those of you who aren’t familiar with their story, Sproatly Smith began exploring our indigenous folk music around 2009, the musicians’ wide-ranging influences and diverse instrumentation breathing new life into old tunes and ancient folklore. Hints of Pink Floyd’s earlier more pastoral meanderings, sounds from foreign lands as if rummaged from the Incredible String Band’s instrument box and the ‘Electric Eden’ folk rock of late ‘60s and early ‘70s can all be heard in Sproatly’s music.
Over time, a cottage industry has mushroomed with the band recording a slew of self-released albums including their first much loved recordings The Yew and the Hare (natch) and The River Wye Suite. The River Wye Suite was premiered live on the banks of the Wye at the first Hereford River Carnival in 2014 and another equally memorable performance unfolded one halcyon summer evening at Cecil Sharp House, the spiritual home of English folk music. This November show is eagerly anticipated as it marks a return to the stage after a gap of what may be a couple of years – none of the band can quite remember - it’s been that long.
Along the way, through word of mouth, the band garnered a dedicated following of like-minded souls and in 2012, out of this semi-underground scene, Weirdshire emerged with the purpose of giving psych-folk and other artists outside of the mainstream music industry opportunities to play in and around Herefordshire. It goes without saying that the Weirdshire collective is made up of kindred spirits and as our musical mapping has overlapped, various ‘Weird Hare’ collaborations have come to fruition.
Special guest, Pamela Wyn Shannon is an American singer-songwriter who, not-so-long-ago, lived in Hay, so playing the Globe again will be a kind of homecoming. Pamela’s unique compositions have an elliptical quality, following their own rules, conjuring up their own kingdoms and time frames. Her songs possess a magic reminiscent of the records by Bert Jansch and Pentangle from the 1960s folk renaissance, filigreed with inventive and intricate guitar work which has been described as like listening to "a tiny chamber orchestra working in unison at the end of her hands.” For this special performance Pamela will be joined on stage by Aneirin Jones (from Welsh chamber folk pioneers VRi) and multi-instrumentalist, Amy Wheel.
